There was a period in Lucian Freud's development of nudes when he passed from exaggerated large eyed magnificent people to rich rugged nudes carved out of paint with explicit genitalia. During this time he painted lovely slightly wide eyed nudes in very high key with compressed darks which inspired this painting."
