Terms of Engagement, Part I — Mikaela Sardo LaMarche, curator for ACA Galleries, NYC, had a clear objective for the July and August N*des-of-the-Month calendars. In the Call for Entries she was seeking “excellent technical skill coupled with a strong aesthetic sense....works that allow the viewer to enter the picture and...engage the composition and subject.” Ms. LaMarche starts July off with a splash, the cool, clear waters immerse Swimmer by Bill Tietsworth, NWS. Another favorite, AnnieX by William Jobling, comes out at us, beguiling and bawdy. Model by Robert Nizamov is mysterious in an orange glow, like speaking in a whisper on late a summer afternoon. Wrapped in drapery, Woman at the window by David Michael Hollander seems to have a story to tell. And, as Ms. LaMarche put it, Joe Mays is doing facinating and unique work, as Dune 4743 clearly shows. Selected from over 800 submissions, the 31 excellent artworks in this calendar seem to express serenity and peace, something much needed in a world increasingly chaotic. Enjoy!
